LacZ catalyzes the hydrolysis of the disaccharide lactose, into gluclose and galactose. The use of LacZ as a reporter gene is due to its ability to cleave the bond between galactose and the indole, 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-hydroxyindole. The cleaved indole, is an easily detectable and insoluble blue compound.
