E-Selectin is a kDa cell surface glycoprotein that belongs to the selectin family. It is transiently expressed on vascular endothelial cells in response to IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha, E-selectin plays an important role in recruiting leukocytes to the site of injury during inflammation. E-selectin also mediates the adhesion of tumor cells to endothelial cells, through binding to E-selectin ligands expressed by neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, memory-effector T-like lymphocytes, natural killer cells or cancer cells. In addition, studies have found that levels of E-Selectin may be elevated in subjects with various pathological conditions.
