Pollen from plants of the genus Artemisia L. is the most widely distributed and highly sensitizing allergen responsible for seasonal allergic rhinitis in China during the summer and autumn. Pollen allergy is classified as a Type I hypersensitivity reaction according to the Gell and Coombs system. In individuals with atopic constitution, exposure to pollen antigens leads to sensitization and the production of specific pollen antibodies. These antibodies are immunoglobulin E (IgE), which bind to the surface of mast cells.
