Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) is a chromatographic technique used in reversed-phase chromatography to improve the retention of highly polar substances. Its working principle involves using a highly polar stationary phase to combine the mobile phase with a high proportion of organic compounds. HILIC uses a wide variety of stationary phases; in principle, any polar stationary phase can be used in HILIC mode. Therefore, in normal-phase chromatography, stationary phases such as silica, amino groups (NH2), glycols, and cyanides (CN) can also be used as HILIC stationary phases.
