Mucins are high molecular weight glycoproteins which constitute the major component of the mucuslayer that protects the gastric epithelium from chemical and mechanical injury. In humans, at least 14mucin genes have been identified that code for the mucin proteins. Reportedly, mucin expression isassociated with tumor type of gastric carcinomas, with MUC2 being associated with mucinouscarcinomas. Anti-MUC2 reactivity is seen in goblet cells of the small intestine and colon, and it is usefulin immunohistochemistry for identifying colonic, gastric and esophageal carcinomas.
