AMPR-22 is an optimised antimicrobial peptide derived from reactive oxygen species modulator 1 (Romo1), a mitochondrial protein encoded by the nucleus which is a nonselective cation channel in the mitochondrial inner membrane. AMPR-22 shows broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against 17 sepsis causing bacteria, including multidrug resistant (MDR) strains, by inducing membrane permeabilization. In vivo, AMPR-22 enables a remarkable survival rate in mice injected with MDR bacteria in murine models of sepsis.
