5-Aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride is the HCl salt of 5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA). 5-ALA is used in photodynamic therapy due to its properties as a photosensitizer, with applications in treatment of acne. 5-Aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride is used for visualisation of tumorous tissue in neurosurgical procedures enabling a reduction in the tumour residual volume and prolongation of progression-free survival in people with malignant gliomas. 5-ALA also has potential applications in diagnostic oncology in detection of bladder cancer.
