Formazin is an aqueous suspension of an insoluble Polymer, formed by the condensation reaction between Hydrazine Sulphate and Hexamethylenetetramine. It was originally suggested as a Turbidity Standard as far back as 1926 and although it suffers from limitations it is still the primary turbidimetric calibration standard. Its limitations include; it tends to settle in solution and agglomerate, as a consequence it has a short shelf life.
