The ViPrimePLUS Human T-lymphotropic Virus 2 RT-qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Human T-lymphotropic Virus 2 genome in clinical samples (e. g. serum blood). Human T-Lymphotropic virus (HTLV) is a RNA retrovirus that predominantly affects the T lymphocytes in human. The Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was once categorized in the HTLV genus before the reclassification in 1983. After 30 years from the initial discovery, 4 types of HTLV have been identified and among them, the most significant two are the HTLV 1 and 2, which have affected about 15-20million people worldwide. HTLV-1 is divided into 6 subclasses which are endemic to different regions. It causes multiple disorders such as the often fatal leukaemia, debilitative myelopathy, uveitis and dermatitis. However, HTLV-2, which consists of 4 subtypes, is associated with milder neurological disorder and chronic pulmonary infections. The novel HTLV-3 and HTLV-4 have been isolated in a few cases but they have little clinical significance. Mode of transmission is via breast milk, sexual contact and intravenous drug abuse. ViPrimePLUS Human T-lymphotropic Virus 2 RT-qPCR Kit is intended for research use only.
