The ViPrimePLUS Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 RT-qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 genome in clinical samples (e. g. blood and serum). Human immunodeficiency virus is a retrovirus that causes the commonly known AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Mode of transmission is via bodily fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid and breast milk. Therefore, unprotected sex, sharing of needles and neonatal HIV infection contribute to the spread of the disease. The rapid increase of incidences, especially in the Third World countries, has been alarming, claiming more than 25 million lives in the past 30 years and leading the world's infectious diseases list. HIV destroys the human T-cells, the body's second line of defense, thus rendering a weakened immune system in infected patients. AIDS is the most advanced stage of the infection that usually takes 10-15 years to develop. At this stage, patients suffer from secondary infection complications and cancers which will eventually lead to death. HIV1 and HIV2 differ in terms of their origin, with the former exhibited as a more virulent strain than the latter. Majority of HIV infections globally is caused by the easily transmittable HIV1, while HIV2 is largely confined to West Africa. ViPrimePLUS Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 RT-qPCR Kit is intended for research use only.
