Dopamine is a precursor to epinephrine and norepinephrine, but all three catecholamines act as hormones and/or neurotransmitters. Dopamine acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain, and low levels are often associated with Parkinson`s Disease. Dopamine levels may also be increased with tumors of the chromaffine system. Epinephrine and norepinephrine are involved with the response to chronic and acute stress, often termed the "fight or flight response."
