      • Overview
        • The components of the pyrolytic boron nitride (PBN) is created through the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. The boron nitride crystals grow parallel to the surface where the vapor is deposited. PBN is the most popular way to obtain high purity boron nitride, produced from high purity gas materials (BCl3 + NH3 --> BN + HCl) resulting in typical grades of 99.99%. Compared with hot pressed boron nitride, this CVD process could obtain high density and high purity boron nitride easily. However, due to the nature of CVD process, it is hard to make thick wall shape or big solid with PBN.
PBN exhibits high mechanical strength and performs well with molten metals and salts, making it popular in high vacuum processes. Pyrolytic materials, like PBN, which lack a melting point and have high thermal conductivity characteristics, are ideal for use as vacuum furnace parts. Pyrolytic boron nitride has a perfect layered structure through CVD manufacturing resulting in anisotropic thermal conductivity, making it suitable for making crucibles for crystal growth.
The pyrolytic boron nitride parts are cut from 1mm 2mm or 3mm thick PBN discs with about 10~14" diameter. The diameter of raw material PBN was limited by equipment size but the finished PBN products could be machined to highly customized shape with competitive cost. On the other hand, crucibles-like shapes are also available for cutom manufacturing.
