SV40 large T antigen is a protein encoded by polyomavirus SV40. This protein is crucial for viral replication and has been extensively studied for its role in altering cell functions and promoting tumorigenesis in infected cells.
One important application of large T antigen is for the immortalization of primary cells in culture. By inactivating tumor suppressor proteins like p53 and Rb, it allows cells to bypass senescence and continue dividing indefinitely.
