Ac-Nle-Gln-His-D-Phe-Arg-D-Trp-Gly-NH2
Alpha-MSH is known to act as a protective agent against LPS-induced endotoxic shock. HP-228, a structurally related heptapeptide, is a significantly more
effective in vivo protective agent. It prevents the induction of nitric oxide synthase activity and endotoxic shock by LPS in rats in vivo, but not in vitro.
Thus, its action appears to be indirect, involving a metabolite or additional mediator.
