Overview

It is a membrane-bound receptor and member of the melanocortin receptor family. It interacts with adrenocorticotropic and MSH hormones and is mediated by G proteins. The gene is an intronless gene. Defects in this gene are a cause of autosomal dominant obesity. Malfunction in the energy homeostasis system is a major cause of developing obesity. Melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4) plays a crucial role in this system as a key receptor.
