      • Overview
        • Lipoprotein Lipase (LPL) is an enzyme that breaks down triglycerides into fatty acids (FA) to be used as energy or stored.
The FAs are carried away by two different lipoproteins:
chylomicrons (carry FAs from the intestine to the blood) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL-carry FAs from the liver to the bloodstream). Deficiency or dysfunction of LPL is observed in individuals with hyperlipidemia of types I, IV and V.
