Versican is a protein encoded by the VCAN gene which is approximately 372, 8 kDa. Versican is secreted into the extracellular space. It is involved in the integrin pathway, ERK signalling, glycosaminoglycan metabolism and phospholipase-C pathway. This protein falls under the aggrecan/versican proteoglycan family. It is a large chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan and is a major component of the extracellular matrix. This protein is involved in cell adhesion, proliferation, migration and angiogenesis and plays a central role in tissue morphogenesis and maintenance. Versican is expressed in the cerebral white matter and plasma. Mutations in the VCAN gene may result in wagner vitreoretinopathy. STJ96239 was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum by affinity-chromatography using epitope-specific immunogen. This polyclonal antibody detects endogenous levels of versican protein.
