Insulin is a peptide hormone produced in the pancreas by the beta cells. It is formed as a precursor molecule preproinsulin which is cleaved into proinsulin and further to mature insulin. Insulin is important for carbohydrate and fat metabolism and its deficiency leads to diabetes mellitus.
