Galectin-3 (Mac-2 antigen, IgE-binding protein, L-29, or CBP30) is a soluble lectin that binds to _-galactoside sugars found on several proteins. It is a pro-inflammatory and pro-fibriotic marker involved in fibrosis of various organs, including heart, vessels, lungs, liver, and kidneys. Its expression is upregulated in chronic inflammatory diseases, heart failure, hypertension and atherosclerotic lesions, and it is involved in several pathophysiological processes including cancer, liver cirrhosis, and diabetes mellitus.
