5-bromoisophthalonitrile is analogous to 4-bromoisophthalonitrile, belonging to the family of isophthalonitriles (benzene containing two nitrile groups in meta (1,3) positions). In addition to the synthesis of chemicals with anti-inflammatory properties, 5-bromoisophthalonitrile (or 5-bromobenzene-1,3-dicarbonitrile) and other structural isomers are used for producing modified thioazole chromophores. The benzenedicarbonitrile moiety of the 5-bromoisophthalonitrile is added to the functionalised chromophore, endowing it with optoelectronic properties to be used as organic solar cells.
