2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl, commonly known as TEMPO, is a radical catalyst that belongs to the family of niroxyl radicals. These compounds can be used in the catalysis of alcohols to carbonyls when coupled with approriate oxidants. It is interesting to note that when coupled with Cu(II), TEMPO can be a green solution in oxidising primary alcohols to aldehydes under aerobic conditions. If used in conjuction with EPR it can be used to deteremine the structure of biological systems. TEMPO is also employed to mediate polymerisations by mopping up other free radicals.
