Samarium is a rare-earth element with a silvery-white appearance. It has interesting magnetic properties, including a high magnetic susceptibility and a pronounced magnetocaloric effect. Samarium is used in permanent magnets, such as samarium-cobalt (SmCo) magnets, which find applications in high-performance motors, generators, and other magnetic devices. Samarium-doped materials, such as samarium-doped fiber amplifiers (SDFAs), are used in optical communication systems.
