Background
ICAM-5, also known as telencephalin, is a type I integral membrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is specifically expressed in the postnatal excitatory neuronal cell bodies, dendritic shafts, and dendritic filopodia of the telencephalon. ICAM-5 functions in both the immune and nervous systems. ICAM-5 strongly stimulates neurite outgrowth. It is cleaved by matrix metalloproteases upon activation of glutamate receptors or degraded through endocytosis resulting in increased spine maturation. The cleaved soluble fragment of ICAM-5 is immunosuppressive, which may be important in neuronal inflammatory diseases.
