HESX1 encodes a conserved homeobox protein that is a transcriptional repressor in the developing forebrain and pituitary gland. Mutations in HESX1 are associated with septooptic dysplasia, HESX1-related growth hormone deficiency, and combined pituitary hormone deficiency.
