Cefotaxime Sodium or the sodium salt of cefotaxime, is a beta-lactam, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with anti-bactericidal activity. In comparison to the first and second generations of cephalosporins, cefotaxime sodium has a higher activity against gram-negative bacteria and a lower activity against gram-positive bacteria. Cefotaxime sodiumin activates penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. Such inactivation interferes with the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains and leads tothe weakness of bacterial cell wall and cell lysis.
