L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that is found in most proteins and is a precursor of serotonin (a neurotransmitter involved in regulating appetite, sleep, mood, and pain). Different enzymes including tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH), indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), and tryptophan-2,3-dioxygenase (TDO) required for the biosynthesis of serotonin from Tryptophan. Tryptophan is considered as a natural sedative and can be found in dairy products, meats, brown rice, fish, and soybeans.
