          Background

Misoprostol is a cytoprotective prostaglandin E1 analog, which displays agonist activity against the EP1, EP2, EP3 and EP4 subtypes of the prostaglandin E receptor stably expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells, with Ki values of 120, 250, 67 and 67 nM. The stimulation of prostaglandin receptors in the stomach reduces gastric acid secretion, thus exerting protective effect on the gastrointestinal mucosa. Misoprostol has been approved for the prevention and treatment of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-induced gastric ulcers in patients taking NSAIDs and at high risk for ulceration.
