Full Name: Bacillus anthracis Lethal factor
BACKGROUND: Bacillus anthracis, the bacterium responsible for anthrax, secretes two primary toxins, one of which is the lethal factor. This toxin is a zinc-dependent metalloprotease that collaborates with the protective antigen (PA) to infiltrate host cells. Once inside, it cleaves mitogen-activated protein kinase kinases (MAPKKs), disrupting crucial cell signaling pathways. This disruption can result in cell death, tissue damage, and may lead to severe circulatory shock, posing a fatal risk to the infected host.
