Protein Name
Envelopment polyprotein
Introduction
The Gn protein is a key structural component of the Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), an important pathogen that affects both humans and animals. The Gn protein, along with the Gc protein, forms the glycoprotein envelope that surrounds the RVFV virion. These glycoproteins are essential for virus entry into host cells. The Gn and Gc proteins are embedded in the viral membrane and are responsible for recognizing and binding to host cell receptors, initiating the process of viral entry.
Alternative Names
Rift valley fever virus Glycoprotein N; RVFV Gn; GP; Envelopment polyprotein; Glycoprotein
UniProt
Subcellular Location
Glycoprotein N: Virion membrane
Function
Glycoprotein N: Structural component of the virion that interacts with glycoprotein C (By similarity). It shields the hydrophobic fusion loops of the glycoprotein C, preventing premature fusion (By similarity). The glycoprotein protrusions are arranged on an icosahedral lattice, with T=12 triangulation. They are able to attach the virion to the host cell receptor CD209/DC-SIGN and to promote fusion of membranes with the late endosome after endocytosis of the virion (By similarity). Plays a role in the packaging of ribonucleoproteins and polymerase during virus assembly (By similarity).
