BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite responsible for the infectious disease toxoplasmosis. One of the most important molecules on the surface of this parasite is the major surface antigen 1 (SAG1). SAG1 is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored protein predominantly found on the surface of the Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoite stage.
