BACKGROUND: L1 is the major capsid protein of HPV16, and it self-assembles into pentamers, known as capsomeres. These capsomeres further assemble into the icosahedral capsid structure that encapsulates the viral DNA. The L1 protein constitutes about 80% of the total protein mass of the HPV virion.
