BACKGROUND: HIV protease is an essential enzyme (an aspartyl protease) encoded by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It cleaves the large Gag and Gag-Pol polyproteins into smaller, functional viral proteins necessary for viral maturation and infectivity. It is a critical target for antiretroviral drugs.
