BACKGROUND: The Internal Ribosomal Entry Site (IRES) of Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is a specific RNA sequence within the 5' untranslated region of the viral genome. It allows the ribosome to directly bind and initiate translation of the viral RNA in a cap-independent manner. It is an RNA structure, not a protein, but interacts with ribosomal proteins.
