Full Name: Clostridium tetani Tetanus toxin
BACKGROUND: Clostridium tetani is an environmental Gram-positive, spore-forming and anaerobic rod-shaped bacterium which synthesizes a potent neurotoxin, the tetanus toxin (TeNT). C. tetani spores can enter an organism through an open wound. Spores germinate and C. tetani grows in anaerobic conditions in necrotic tissues. TeNT is synthesized at the end of the exponential growth phase and is released in the surrounding tissues.
