BACKGROUND: Outer surface protein B (OspB) is a major lipoprotein found on the surface of Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. OspB is predominantly expressed when the bacteria are in the tick midgut and is thought to play a role in the bacterium's survival within the tick and during transmission to the mammalian host.
