BACKGROUND: This refers to the carbohydrate epitope galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose. While not a protein, it's a key antigen involved in alpha-gal syndrome (red meat allergy). Antibodies against alpha-gal, often developed after a tick bite, bind to this carbohydrate present in most non-primate mammals.
