BACKGROUND: These are covalent lesions formed in DNA between adjacent pyrimidine bases (cytosine or thymine) upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. These photoproducts can distort the DNA helix, blocking replication and transcription, and are a major cause of UV-induced mutagenesis and skin cancer.
