Protein Name
Secreted frizzled-related protein 2
Introduction
This gene encodes a member of the SFRP family that contains a cysteine-rich domain homologous to the putative Wnt-binding site of Frizzled proteins. SFRPs act as soluble modulators of Wnt signaling. Methylation of this gene is a potential marker for the presence of colorectal cancer.
Alternative Names
FRP-2; SARP1; SDF-5
Gene ID
UniProt
Subcellular Location
Secreted
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in adipose tissue, heart, brain, skeletal muscle, pancreas, thymus, prostate, testis, ovary, small intestine and colon. Highest levels in adipose tissue, small intestine and colon.
Cell Line Specificity
Cancer enhanced
Function
Soluble frizzled-related proteins (sFRPS) function as modulators of Wnt signaling through direct interaction with Wnts. They have a role in regulating cell growth and differentiation in specific cell types. SFRP2 may be important for eye retinal development and for myogenesis.
