Introduction
The SARS-CoV S protein, also known as the Spike (S) protein, is a key structural protein of the SARS-CoV virus, which causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The S protein is a glycoprotein that protrudes from the viral surface, giving coronaviruses their characteristic crown-like appearance (hence the name "coronavirus"). It is composed of two functional subunits:
S1 Subunit: This subunit is responsible for binding to the host cell receptor. In the case of SARS-CoV, the receptor is Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2). The S2 subunit facilitates the fusion of the viral membrane with the host cell membrane, allowing the viral RNA to enter the host cell and initiate infection.
