Gene Symbol
GPC
Protein Name
Pre-glycoprotein polyprotein GP complex
Introduction
Junín virus Glycoprotein 1 (GP1) is a surface protein of the Junín virus, the causative agent of Argentine hemorrhagic fever. GP1 is responsible for binding to host cell receptors, a crucial step for viral entry and infection. It is also the primary target for neutralizing antibodies.
Alternative Names
GPC; Pre-glycoprotein polyprotein GP complex; Pre-GP-C; GP1; Glycoprotein G1
UniProt
Subcellular Location
Virion membrane
Function
Stable signal peptide: Functions as a cleaved signal peptide that is retained as the third component of the GP complex (GP-C). Helps to stabilize the spike complex in its native conformation. The SSP is required for efficient glycoprotein expression, post-translational maturation cleavage of G1 and G2, glycoprotein transport to the cell surface plasma membrane, formation of infectious virus particles, and acid pH-dependent glycoprotein-mediated cell fusion (By similarity).
